The 6-ft fence rule

Sulphur's form cites Ordinance 234, Chapter 19, and applies to every pool with a depth of at least 18 in of water (City of Sulphur). Compare that with Lake Charles, which requires a code barrier for pools deeper than 24 in, where the model code sets at least 4 ft (Lake Charles). In Sulphur, then:

  • The fence or wall must be at least 6 ft tall.
  • Gates and doors need self-closing, self-latching hardware that keeps them shut.
  • A shallow above-ground or wading pool can still fall under the rule once it holds 18 in.
  • A 6-ft privacy fence you already have may count, if every gate is fitted with the right hardware. Ask the inspector.

Fence prices by material are on our deck and fence cost guide; the extra height is worth pricing before you sign.

What has to pass before the pool is filled

The form is plain about the order of work: the fence or wall, the gate hardware and the bonded, grounded electrical must all be complete before water goes in (City of Sulphur). Build that into the schedule. A fiberglass shell is normally filled as it is backfilled, so the fence and electrical have to be ready, or the plan agreed with the inspector, before the shell is set. A gunite pool is filled after the finish goes on, which gives the fence crew more time.

Louisiana also requires a contractor with a swimming pool classification for residential pool work over $7,500 (LSLBC); check the name on the state lookup. The office marks the flood zone on every application, so have your survey ready.

Other permits a pool can need

Sulphur's application list includes separate electrical, plumbing, gas, grading and culvert permits (City of Sulphur). A pool can touch several: the pump circuit, a gas heater line, and grading if spoil is spread on the lot or the yard is reshaped. Ask your builder which ones they will pull, and write it into the contract. Louisiana 811 needs two full business days' notice before digging (811).

Ground and water west of the river

Sulphur shares the slow-draining prairie soils of the rest of the parish. USDA describes Crowley soils as saturated at 0.5–1.5 ft from December to April (USDA), so a winter dig often means pumping. Our water-table guide explains relief valves and why no one should drain a pool on wet ground. For fiberglass, San Juan lists a dealer in Sulphur (San Juan); confirm it is current and licensed.
