Your builder normally pulls the permits. Make sure the contract says so.

Fences, gates and doors

Lake Charles requires a barrier for any pool more than 24 in deep, built to the building code (city code enforcement). The model pool code calls for a barrier at least 4 ft tall, gaps small enough to stop a child, and gates that close and latch on their own. A house wall can count only if doors to the pool are alarmed or self-closing. Confirm the exact rule with your permit office before you buy a fence.

Flood zones

Calcasieu Parish asks for an elevation survey in all flood zones, and a permit before any work in a Special Flood Hazard Area (parish checklist). Ask the parish how this applies to a pool on your lot. Pools on coastal V-zone lots need an engineered design (flood guidance), which mostly affects Cameron Parish.

Check the license

For residential pool work over $7,500, Louisiana requires a contractor with a swimming pool classification (LSLBC). Look the company up on the state verify page and match the name on the contract.

Before anyone digs

Louisiana 811 needs two full business days' notice before digging, and it's free (811). Your builder should call, but it's worth asking. Keep runoff and spoil off your neighbor's lot; drainage complaints are common here.

Common questions

Do I need a permit for a pool in Lake Charles?

Yes. In the city it's the Permit Center at 326 Pujo St, (337) 491-1294, with separate electrical and plumbing permits (City of Lake Charles). Sulphur, Westlake and the other towns have their own offices; Moss Bluff and Carlyss go through the parish. Your builder normally pulls them.

How high does a pool fence have to be?

Lake Charles says any pool deeper than 24 in needs a barrier that meets the building code (city code enforcement). The model pool code sets at least 4 ft with a self-closing, self-latching gate. Your permit office confirms the local rule.

How do I check a pool builder's license?

Louisiana requires a swimming pool classification for residential pool work over $7,500 (LSLBC). Look the company up on the board's verify licensure page before you pay a deposit.
